Movember Explained for Barbers: What It Is, Why It Exists and How It Works

One month. One moustache. A serious reason. Movember starts on 1 November, and for barbers it is the one month of the year when the moustache takes centre stage. Here is the story behind our Sultan Barber News reel, explained for barbers: what Movember is, why it exists and how it actually works.

What is Movember?

The name says it: "Mo" is moustache, and Movember is Mo + November. Every November, people grow a moustache to raise money and awareness for men's health.

Why does Movember exist?

According to Movember, men die nearly five years earlier than women, mostly from preventable causes. The money raised goes to three areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.

How does Movember work?

Movember describes it in four steps:

  1. Sign up and set up a fundraising profile.
  2. Start the month clean-shaven.
  3. Grow your Mo all month long.
  4. Ask friends and family to donate.

No moustache? You can still take part by moving for mental health or hosting an event instead.

Where did Movember start?

In Melbourne, Australia, in 2003. Two mates joked about bringing the moustache back, and they found 30 guys willing to take up the challenge.

Cuts and conversations: barbers in the story

Barbers already play a part. In September 2026, at the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan, County Offaly, Movember's barber shed was back for a second year, offering free haircuts and real conversations in the chair.

Why barbers should care

For a barbershop, Movember is a natural talking point. Clients who start clean-shaven on 1 November will spend the month growing something new, and a moustache that is shaped and kept tidy is easier to wear for 30 days. Conversations already happen in the chair, and starting conversations is exactly what Movember asks for. Are you or your team growing one this year? If your clients are growing a full beard rather than a Mo, our guide on how to use beard oil covers how often, how much and what it cannot do.
