Beard Wax

Beard wax is where shape comes from. Oil conditions; wax holds. A client with a beard past the first few centimetres eventually asks how to stop it splaying at the sides, and the answer is wax — which makes it the natural second product on a retail shelf once beard oil is moving.

Beard wax or beard oil?

They do different jobs and most clients with a full beard end up using both. Beard oil goes on damp skin and treats the hair and the skin underneath. Beard wax goes on a dry beard afterwards and controls the shape — flattening stray hairs at the cheek line, holding a moustache out of the mouth, keeping the whole thing looking deliberate rather than merely long. A short or new beard rarely needs wax. Anything past roughly two months of growth usually does.

Hold, finish and the mistake people make

The common error is treating beard wax like hair wax and using far too much. A fingernail's worth, warmed until it turns clear between the fingers, then worked through from the roots. Too much and it goes waxy and visible, which is exactly what a client trying to look well-groomed does not want.
