1,000+ fans, 12 mullets, 1 champion. Denmark has its own national mullet championship, and this year's edition turned a Copenhagen square into a stage for the most talked-about haircut in barbering. Here is the story behind our latest Sultan Barber News reel, explained for barbers.
What is Mullet Mesterskabet?
Mullet Mesterskabet is the Danish Mullet Championship. On Saturday 6 June 2026, the fourth edition took over Onkel Dannys Plads in Copenhagen's Vesterbro, and more than 1,000 spectators turned up to watch.
It started with a rule. Founder Steffen Stiw Weber, an electrician, wanted to enter the American Mullet Championship, but its citizenship rules kept him out. So he started a championship of his own.
How the mullets are judged
Twelve competitors took part. They were scored on three things: style, uniqueness and performance, so mullet moves count as much as the cut itself. Entrants brought wrestling-style entrances and dance routines, and one competitor styled his hair like the Danish flag. There were live haircuts during the evening, too.
A Copenhagen salon owner sat on the judging panel and summed up the ideal mullet as "ugly in a beautiful way".
Why barbers should care
Business in the front, party in the back is no longer just a joke. An event like this shows how much attention a single statement cut can get when the craft becomes a show. Would you enter, or would you rather judge?
