Top Barbers Now Wear Six Hats: SQUIRE's State of Barbershops 2026 Explained for Barbers
Dela
The chair is just where it starts. An industry report from SQUIRE, a U.S. barbershop booking app, says today's top barbers and shop owners wear six hats at once. Here is what the data behind our latest Sultan Barber News reel shows, explained for barbers and shop owners.
What is The State of Barbershops 2026?
SQUIRE's report, The State of Barbershops 2026, looks at 13.9 million appointments in about 7,000 U.S. barbershops, from May 2025 to April 2026. The numbers are American, so read them as a U.S. picture rather than a rule for every market.
The six hats top barbers wear
According to the report, today's top-performing barbers and owners are also:
- Managers
- Marketers
- Community leaders
- Customer experience liaisons
- Business owners
- Content creators
Or, as the report puts it: "The chair is just where it starts."
Why regulars matter more than strangers
The strongest shops grow through regulars, not strangers. In SQUIRE's data, 44.6% of all visits come from a client who had visited that same shop before. Repeat business, not chasing new walk-ins, is what separates the top shops from the rest.
Three habits of the top shops
- Win the rebook. Top shops get regulars back in the chair sooner.
- Ask for a review at checkout. Top shops make asking for a review part of every checkout.
- Build a local brand. The marketer hat means showing your work on Instagram, TikTok and Google.
What a haircut costs now
The report puts the average U.S. haircut at $43 in 2026.
What barbers can take from it
You don't need a booking app to use these ideas. Book the next appointment before the client leaves, ask happy clients for a review while they're still at the counter, and post your best cuts where locals search. Which hat do you wear the most?
